Release is a single created by Pedro Bessa, a friend I made when we were studying International Relations in Rio de Janeiro. During the pandemic, I had returned to live in Fortaleza, while he was living in Berlin. I was learning how to do documentary films, and he was learning how to produce electronic music.
The lockdown experience has created a sense of temporal suspension for many, accompanied by a creative opening. We have had more time for ourselves, to rediscover who we essentially are and who we were being in that moment of pause in our collective experience. At home, we spent more time with ourselves, as if we were observing a photograph, a portrait, in more detail.
We were reminded of what we still dreamed of and what we truly desired, so that our souls could be set free. Forced to stay indoors, I listened less to the outside world and reconnected with my leisure and emotions, which felt as the present moment had been given back to us."
This is a video art that speaks of liberation, a moment of rupture with the external and of diving deeper into inner listening. It requires us to let go of the fear that holds us back and prevents us from knowing a deeper layer of being within ourselves. This reflection, expressed in video art, was produced spontaneously and almost urgently.
I started editing the video right after receiving the message from my friend Bessa, who sent me this file with his new song. When I played it for the first time, I instantly imagined a narrative filled with scenes of brief, meaningful gestures—an unexpected encounter, the anguish of waiting, surrendering to another, or dancing with eyes closed in a crowd— all of them as archives of my own memory captured in films or music videos that helped me narrate what I needed to express. Within a few hours, after entering a state of creative flow, I was able to bring to the surface my ability to intuit what was in my mind and heart through my bubbling associations of sounds, images and ideas, like an improvised dance on stage.
The flow of editing allows me to experiment and listen to my own truth more clearly. Revisiting this video years after it was first published makes me recognize in it the desire for seeking my own freedom, one that makes me feel alive ☄︎ by always allowing myself to live an eternal movement of constant and beautiful change. 〰️
