On my recent trip to Berlin, I was deeply impacted by the painting Die Madonna von Stalingrad in a memorial church. The original church, built in the 1890s, was destroyed during the Air Battle of Berlin in World War II, and the site now resonates with memory and reflection on the atrocities committed by the country during the conflict.
Created by painter Kurt Reuber while he was a prisoner of war in Stalingrad, in his final moments of life, this work carries an immense emotional and spiritual weight. Inspired by this experience, I created the video art entitled Licht, Leben, Liebe—words written by the artist alongside his work—which seeks to capture the essence of light, life and love that still endures even in times of darkness.
Berlin is a multicultural city that constantly confronts its past, with memorials of accountability and an ongoing search for reconciliation, yet it is the target of constant criticism about what is remembered and what remains erased.
It is a place where the horrors of the dehumanization of others that occurred in local history are revisited, but also where the essence of human life and the primordial meaning of feeling loved become even more evident.
In this city, I found not only a memorial to the absurdity of war, but also a powerful reminder of the human capacity to rise again, to reconcile, and to find hope in preserving humanity amidst chaos.
